Im Calancatal wird hauptsächlich Vieh- und Alp- und Holzwirtschaft betrieben, da die Steilhänge und die Höhenlage nur wenig Ackerbau zulassen (Roggen-, Weizen- und später Kartoffelanbau). Zahlreiche Auswanderer, die in den Nachbarländern als Korbflechter, Glaser, Pechverkäufer und Harzer arbeiteten, brachten dem Tal willkommene Zusatzeinkünfte.
